激進組織「伊斯蘭國」（IS）在敘利亞訓練了一批女警察統治女性。這些「女蓋世太保」監督IS統轄區內的女性舉止言行衣著，對違規者施以鞭刑和咬刑外，並逼迫女性成為聖戰士的性奴。令人震驚的是IS的女警中，至少有60人來自英國。
英國第4電視頻道在紀錄片「逃出伊斯蘭國」中指出，IS在敘利亞占領區內立下嚴格的伊斯蘭法規，強迫這些女性必須恪守，否則將受到中世紀式的野蠻酷刑和虐待。IS規定所有女性外出都必須有男性陪伴，且需穿上兩件袍子，隱藏自己的身體，以黑手套掩蓋她們的手外，頭上且需戴上三層面紗，確保即使在陽光直射下，也看不到她們的面容。
一名曾加入IS女警隊的年輕女子說，她負責檢查女性的服裝，當街糾正並鞭打不符規定者。IS女警月薪100英鎊（約台幣4800元），這在當地是非常優厚的薪資。有些女警隊員則冒充家庭主婦，混在人群中進行監聽。
對於那些被綁架的女性，她們也不手軟。在短短數星期內，遭綁架的女性往往要為超過百名IS聖戰士服務，即使是自願擔聖戰新娘者，也可能持續地被迫結婚、離婚和再婚。
令人不可思議的是，來自歐洲，尤其是英國的穆斯林女性卻前仆後繼的加入IS，包括前年離家的20歲蘇格蘭富家女阿克莎。不過，倫敦智庫「亨利傑克遜社會」研究員安瑪麗代爾表示，許多少女到了那裡，夢想破滅，但卻逃脫無門。
